Simple Saturday Projects - Happy Napkins

I have been on the look out for bright colored cloth napkins. We are having a load of guests this summer and I can not say I love cooking....but...I can say I LOVE setting the table! I collect dishes and table linens and I find it very enjoyable mixing and matching them to create a beautiful table. Much to my disappointment...I could not find "happy" napkins at any of my favorite treasure hunting locations. So....this led to my recent Simple Saturday Project.....Happy Napkins.

There is a box of quilting fabric in my studio that I have not had time to fold or store. Embarrassingly enough....I forgot what fun fabrics were hiding in the box and when I opened it I knew I had found my new napkins. Here is a short tutorial for making your own cloth napkins.

Tutorial: Select two coordinating fabrics, one for the front and one for the back of the napkin. Cut them into 18.5" squares and place them in sets with right sides together. Stitch around the outside edges with a 1/4" seam allowance and leave a 3" opening on one side. Clip the excess fabric at the corners.

Turn the fabric right side out and and press them flat with a hot iron. Use a chopstick to push the corners into a nice point. Press the raw edges of the opening so they are even with the sewn edge. Top stitch close to the edge of each napkin. Repeat this process for each napkin. Tah-Dah! You have a new set of cloth napkins! This is a perfect way to use scraps of fabric or fat quarters.

Cut smaller fabric pieces (I cut 12.5" squares) for cocktail napkins!
