This time it is Black and White - Textile Design Process

I really like black and white designs. I enjoy the bold contrast and the "opposites attract" imagery of black and white. Today.....as part of the #NaBloPoMo series I thought I would share a short version of my textile design process.

My process usually starts with a bit of visual inspiration.....photos I have taken or images that I find on the internet. My favorite tools are a black Sharpie and a pad of white Bristol paper.

A design element or elements are taken from a drawing and scanned into the computer. The  elements are manipulated (resized and cleaned up) and put into repeat using Photoshop or Illustrator.

A market is selected, either Home Decor, Fashion, or Quilting, and the design concept is created. The concept below was for the Home Decor Bedding Market.

My favorite design process is very hands on.....the quilts below were cut free hand and sewn together without a predetermined pattern. I guess we can call that "free form" design.

Aging Gracefully

I came across these photos today while I was searching for something else. I remember these flowers from the summer. I cut them from our garden and brought them to my studio to use for drawing inspiration. Several weeks later.....I was cleaning up my work space and I found them again.  Perfectly preserved....still looking beautiful with all their wrinkles and imperfections.  I hope to age as gracefully as these flowers.

I'm going to stop complaining about my extra pounds and wrinkles and hot flashes......in hopes that I may "age gracefully"..........well at least for today.

Thanks for stopping in.....I know there are many other things you could be doing!

Hugs to you,

Deb

Patterns and Textures: The Game

Here are the rules for the Game:

During the next 24 hours find 15 patterns or textures in your environment that you have not noticed before. Look at the details......on your floor, on your plants, on your skin, on the sidewalk, on the buildings, and even in your food. Look everywhere! The patterns are in the details...look closely! Take a photo or make a quick sketch of the patterns that you find.

I hope you will be inspired to see things in a new way that may other wise get lost in the rush of your day. Here are a few images that may inspire you to look in unexpected places.
